NVIDIA's Project Maximus takes multi-GPU mainstream, 'Virtual Graphics' takes it to the cloud
August 9, 2011 at 12:40 AM

NVIDIA just wrapped up an intimate press briefing here at SIGGRAPH 2011, where — amongst other things — it officially took the wraps off of two major initiatives. Project Maximus and Virtual Graphics are the two main topics of conversation here, and while both are obviously targeting working professionals at the moment, there’s no question that a trickle-down effect is already on the company’s mind. With Maximus, the outfit plans to stop recommending bigger GPUs to pros, and start recommending “a light Quadro GPU and as large a Tesla as you can get in the system.” The overriding goal here is to make multi-GPU technology entirely more accessible; to date, it hasn’t exactly been easy to get a finely tuned multi-GPU setup to the masses, but it sounds like a good deal of future flexibility (it’ll be “nearly infinitely scalable”) aims to change that. Just imagine: dynamic coupling and decoupling of GPUs depending on user load, at a far more detailed level within the application…

Wanted: Beta testers for new game 'Wheel of Wealth'
August 9, 2011 at 12:40 AM

Like Wheel of Fortune? If so then you’ll want to head to Shantek Online Solutions, developers of an upcoming game called ‘Wheel of Wealth’. They’re looking for about 100 beta testers for their upcoming release to put their game through the wringer, finding bugs, giving recommendations, etc. You don’t need to be a developer either as they’re going through the new “private beta Marketplace” made available via the AppHub. You simply supply your LiveID, you get a special download link from the Marketplace and bam, you have a new game to test for a few weeks.

Sounds good to us. So why not lend a hand, help make a game better and have some fun while you’re at it. Win win. Head right here for more info.

Leakster names Sprint's latest: Samsung Epic 4G Touch, HTC EVO Design 4G, and Motorola Admiral
August 9, 2011 at 12:40 AM

We love starting the week with a good leak, and thanks to an anonymous tipster, we’re swimming in a flood of juicy names. First, it appears the Samsung Within is getting a new alias, and without delaying your anticipation, let us re-introduce you to Sprint’s upcoming Galaxy S II handset: the Epic 4G Touch. As the moniker suggests, the QWERTY keyboard is likely sliding away, though lovers of physical buttons might find solace with the mysterious Epic 2. If your ideal smartphone combines qHD resolution with HTC Sense — and eschews the 3D display and dual-core CPU — the Kingdom is one step closer to reality, and it’ll be known as the EVO Design 4G. Finally, a new Motorola will arrive at the Now Network, and it’s been christened the Admiral. Unlike its peers, it’s lacking the “4G” nomenclature, meaning it’s avoiding the upper echelons of Sprint’s stable… and hopefully sporting longer battery life, too.

[Thanks, anonymous]

Why Windows Phone Mango Can't Edit Older Office Documents

Rumored 'iTunes Replay' service won't launch soon according to report
August 8, 2011 at 10:06 PM

Apple’s upcoming “iTunes Replay” service is indeed in the works, but the company has yet to sign “cloud agreements” with at least four of the top-six film studios in Hollywood that are necessary in order to launch the service, CNET News reports. As such, the site calls earlier reports that suggested an imminent launch premature. Apple is reportedly working on a service that will allow iTunes users to stream and re-download movies purchased through iTunes. Such a service would require Apple to sign new licensing agreements with motion picture studios in order to secure the appropriate rights that would allow Apple to serve content from the cloud and to multiple devices. According to CNET News, negotiations for these rights could “drag on for months.” The report also mentions a possible hurdle for Apple: HBO. HBO has agreements in place that grant it exclusive digital distribution rights to new movies from three of the six major film studios — 20th Century Fox, Universal and Warner Bros. — for a certain period of time. HBO’s deals have caused problems for streaming services in the past, and it looks like Apple could be the latest victim.

Xperia Play's Playstation One Emulator Reversed Engineered To Play Custom ISO's [Video]
August 8, 2011 at 10:06 PM

Thanks to one of our awesome Phandroid readers, I stumbled upon a rather amazing breakthrough over on XDA. Apparently, a developer named yifanlu has been hard at work looking for a way to reverse engineer the native Playstation One emulator found on the Xperia Play to play converted custom ISO’s.

Well, after a week of nonstop work, yifanlu has managed to get an ISO of Crash Bandicoot 3 up and running on the Xperia Play and the results are near perfect. Here’s a video as proof of his efforts:

According to yifanlu, everything is fully functional except for “manual” (instruction manual) and multi-disc games.

Now I just need to write the GUI [program to convert ISO to APK]. No more then a day for that. As much as I hate Java in every way, I feel like it would be the easiest way of making a multi-platform tool. I’ll also do a final writeup on my site in a couple of days.

There you have it! We may have a way to convert already previously owned (or downloaded) Playstation One games for use on the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and have those games play smoother and with fewer bugs than using conventional emulators on Android. Once this is achieved, we can finally crown the Xperia Play the king of old school gaming on Android. We’ll be keeping you guys updated on the progress.

Thanks, Nhialor!

Add Japanese (and other) language packs to Mango Beta
August 8, 2011 at 9:52 PM

Mango not only promises to bring 500 new features for regular users but also numerous other languages for the rest of the planet. For those who want some Japanese on their Windows Phone now, or perhaps those looking to explore how to add other language, a neat little hack has appeared over at NanaPho.

The trick requires a registry edit before you upgrade to Mango (you can’t yet edit the registry on Mango devices, as far as we know) and may be good for those playing with DFT’s custom ROMs. While in NoDo or earlier, simply launch the registry editor and make these changes:

1. add this entry on your NoDo (7390 or 7392) phone.

key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\MUI\Available

name: 0411

value: Japanese

2. update to Mango Beta 2 Refresh

3. you will get Japanese language

Of course the potential is there to add other languages, though it has to be verified. Other language packs which are made available with the Mango release include 0413 (Netherlands), 0419 (Russian), 0804 (Simplified Chinese), 0404 (Traditional Chinese) and in theory, those should work too. Looks to be a cool trick for those not wanting to wait the extra month or two for the RTM Mango to hit.

BlackBerry vs iPhone vs Android – it's Klout Klobberin' time!
August 8, 2011 at 9:52 PM

Klout BlackBerry vs iPhone vs Android

Klout is the standard of influence, as it itself suggests. If you don't know about Klout, then Klout doesn't know you.In a nutshell is a well-known one stop shop for measuring your online social influence. It "uses over 35 variables on Facebook and Twitter to measure True Reach, Amplification Probability and Network Score".

Klout recently pitted iPhone and Android against each other in a no holds barred Klout showdown. They compared the average Klout scores of both iPhone and Android influencers. After the smoke cleared, iPhone came out on top with a 42.0 to 40.6 win. So where does BlackBerry come into play? Klout was later asked to throw BlackBerry into the mix. From the onslaught rose a new champion…BlackBerry (in typical RIMPIRE Strikes Back fashion) emerged with a Klout score of 43.6!! I guess the real movers and shakers are BlackBerry users- don't doubt the Klout.

I guess you can thank influencers like Kevin with his Klout score of 64; the Force is strong with this one. Mine is only 34.5, hmm I guess I have some work to do…

YouTube App Updated in the Market to 2.2.14 – New Features!
August 8, 2011 at 9:52 PM

This image has no alt text

The YouTube app has been updated in the Android Market to version 2.2.14 and brings about a slew of much needed new features. Such as, the ability to create/edit/delete playlists straight from the app. Also, the YouTube app now gives you a little more control when uploading content from your phone. For instance, can now edit the title of your video, description and even mess around the privacy settings for those “special” videos you don’t want anyone else watching. Of course, the normal bug fixes and performance enhancements can also be found.

You can find the updated version in your Market right now. If the updated version isn’t showing up just yet, don’t worry. Keep checking and it’s sure to pop up, seeing how these things rollout out differently amongst the different regions. Have fun!

Apple to offer 25GB of free iCloud storage to current MobileMe subscribers
August 8, 2011 at 7:48 PM

If you’re currently an active MobileMe subscriber, Apple may soon offer you an incentive to move all of your data over to its new iCloud service. From the day the service goes public until June 30th of next year users who move their data to iCloud will receive 25GB of free iCloud storage for as long as their iCloud account is active, 9to5 Mac reported on Monday. Every iCloud user will receive 5GB free from the get-go and and an additional 10GB will cost $20 per year. An extra 20GB will cost $40 per year and 50GB of added storage will set you back $100 annually. ICloud is still available only to developers but we have no doubt it will be fully live by the time Apple finalizes iOS 5 and launches its next iPhone, which is expected to occur in September or October.

Erasable e-paper shown off, erased, shown off again (video)
August 8, 2011 at 7:48 PM

Researchers at Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute are giving the world a peek at i2R, a new type of easily erasable e-paper. The technology uses a thermal printer and cholestric liquid crystals, letting users write and erase its contents up to 260 times. It can print different colored inks and could potentially be used for things like ID badges and signage. The sheets currently cost around $2 a piece to produce and should be available to us consumer types in about two years.

Chromium's experimental touch UI demoed on video, made for meaty fingers
August 8, 2011 at 7:48 PM

Chromium Tablet UI

Google was pretty adamant at I/O that Chrome OS would not be coming tablets, but that hasn’t stopped its open-source cousin from adding some touch friendly features. Chromium (the browser, not the OS) got its first tablet tweaks back in June, but this is the first time we’re seeing them on video. While the larger icons, widgets, and virtual keyboard, may eventually make their way onto the rumored Seaboard, there’s no guarantee these (obviously still early) experiments will ever debut as part of Chrome OS or even the browser. Check out the video after the break for a brief glimpse of this work in progress and, if you’re feeling adventurous, hit up the more coverage link to download the latest source code — just make sure to compile with ‘export GYP_DEFINES=”touchui=1″‘ to unlock the finger-friendly face of Chromium.

New Motorola DROID Bionic profile shots show off how thick the LTE handset is
August 8, 2011 at 6:37 PM

At this point, it feels as though we’ve seen the new Motorola DROID Bionic from just about every angle imaginable. One thing we haven’t seen, though, is exactly how thick the redesigned Bionic will be. Thankfully, the folks at GottaBeMobile have posted some photos that solve that mystery. As you can see above, this thing isn’t going to win any thinness contests, but that shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that’s handled one of Verizon’s other LTE smartphones. Speaking of other LTE…

Honeycomb 3.1 update for LG G-Slate to start pushing Aug 8 or 9 says LG
August 8, 2011 at 6:36 PM

LG G Slate

If you’re patiently waiting for an update for your LG G-Slate, we’ve got good news.  According to a moderator at the official LG community forums, the Honeycomb 3.1 update for the G-Slate should start pushing out as early as Aug 8.  Carrier versions should follow soon thereafter, with Docomo in Japan already having scheduled their update to start Aug 10.  Of course things can change, and we’re only sure once it actually happens.  We have no word when T-mobile is to begin sending out any update for their version, but have reached out to them asking for any information they can share.  We’ll let you know what, if anything, they have to say.

HTC Ruby To Be Hitting T-Mobile soon?
August 8, 2011 at 6:36 PM

Rumor and speculation are nothing new in the wireless industry, especially when it comes to phone launches. T-Mobile is no exception to this model, and the latest scoop revolves around Ms. HTC Ruby and Mr. Blurry Cam. The photo above is the latest of the candid shots involving the Ruby, and the carrier label in the upper right hand corner of the device leaves little doubt as to which wireless home it’ll be bunking down in. Curiously, the device doesn’t carry the Genius button intrinsic to most recent HTC T-Mobile phones, so perhaps it’ll be aimed at a more business-centric clientele. Of course, we’ll know more as either information is leaked or the device is officially announced. Care to do a bit of guessing as to the specs of this newbie? Feel free in the comments below!

Smartphone version of the recent tablet app for XDA TV now available
August 8, 2011 at 2:28 PM

Last week an application was released by XDA member nathanpc. See the full report here. This application was optimized for tablets only, and allowed a user to watch Azrienoch on XDA TV with ease. Without a doubt the XDA members were all over this.

But those who didn’t have a tablet started looking and asking for some small screen love. Well, a week later, nathanpc answered the call with XDA TV (Phone Edition) v1.1.1. So now you can get your weekly fix of XDA TV from your smartphone.

Below is your QR code to download the app. As always be sure to head over to the XDA thread and give some thanks and feedback, as these developers work really hard to bring us many of the great apps we use daily.
