AT&T's first 4G LTE smartphone due by year-end
August 10, 2011 at 10:50 PM

AT&T senior vice president of mobility and consumer markets Pete Ritcher took the stage during the Oppenheimer Technology and Communications Conference on Wednesday, where he confirmed that AT&T will launch its first 4G LTE smartphone by the end of this year. Ritcher reaffirmed AT&T’s intention to deploy its LTE network in 15 markets covering 70 million people by the end of 2011, and it hopes to continue its roll-out on a market-by-market basis, Fierce Wireless reported. AT&T will initially only offer laptop cards alongside the new LTE network, and AT&T is expected to launch 4G LTE in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio this summer. “We are the only carrier with LTE and HSPA+,” Ritcher said. “When you don’t have LTE you will fall back to faster speeds than our competitors,” he added, noting that Verizon’s 4G customers fall back to the slower EV-DO network when LTE is not available.

Nokia's Chris Weber promises US-centric push for Windows Phone 7 devices
August 10, 2011 at 10:50 PM

Nokia’s US prexy Chris Weber’s been making the media rounds lately, talking up the company’s Windows Phone near-future and offering a peek at the marketing blitz to come. In an interview with VentureBeat, Weber confirmed the death of Symbian and the N9′s North American release, but was much less straightforward when asked about the WP7 launch, saying only that a US focus is paramount to the OEM’s global success. The MS-blessed smartphones are set to debut “in volume” next year, at which point Nokia hopes to have ironed out its complex negotiations with carriers, bringing aggressively subsidized handsets to market. Nokia’s chief also engaged in a bit of mobile OS grandstanding, touting Microsoft’s live tile integrated approach as superior to the “outdated” app focus popularized by iOS and Android. And if you’re wondering just how the OEM plans to differentiate its hardware in this cluttered wireless market, expect to see phones with an emphasis on “state-of-the-art imaging technology and battery performance.” Here’s to hoping Weber’s words don’t come back to haunt him when his bet goes live next year.

Take Note, WritePad Brings Stylus Optimized Handwriting to any Honeycomb Tablet.
August 10, 2011 at 10:50 PM

When HTC released the Flyer tablet, I'll admit, I was a bit jealous of its Scribe technology and writing capability; enough so, that I went out and purchased a capacitive stylus to use with my own Xoom tablet. Surely the Xoom's larger screen would be better for writing anyway, but to my dismay, there weren’t many apps for me to write with. Those that did exist weren't exactly as useful  or smooth looking as what the Flyer was touting.

Weeks later, however, XDA forum member Transceiver, has made my pen purchase a worthy investment. Transceiver is the creator of an app still in beta called WritePad, though that name will likely change to some degree because an app with that name already exists in the Android Market.

Although originally designed for the Asus Eee Pad Transformer running 3.2, I've found the app have a silky smooth writing experience on my Xoom as well.

Currently the app features

  • No lag and no jitter between the stylus movement and the screen response.
  • Smart palm detection – only records the writing from your stylus (right handed only for now).
  • Export page and notebook – share the page as a PNG file, or export the whole thing as a ZIP file to your Dropbox or Gmail account.
  • Paper types – comes with four familiar paper types including White, Legal, Composition, & Engineer (Graph Paper)
  • Stylus calibration – instead of drawing where the stylus touches the screen, it will draw where you 'think' the stylus tip is which is good for thicker tip styluses.

If you're a tablet owner, I highly encourage checking this app out. Transceiver is interested in having different types of tablets beta test the app, so go grab it from the application forum and leave him your feedback.

Intel Capital Launches $300M Ultrabook Fund To Invest In Tablet Technologies
August 10, 2011 at 10:50 PM

intel

Intel Capital, the investment arm of chip giant Intel Corporation, has announced a $300 Million Ultrabook Fund to fund technologies that will help deliver new and enhanced user experiences, longer battery life and slim component and platform technologies in personal computing.

Earlier this year, Intel pitched a new category of laptops, Ultrabooks, which are supposed have three distinct features: they are thinner (less than 20mm/0.8 inches), lighter than most existing laptops, and priced below $1,000 in order to become mainstream. Basically Intel says these devices will marry the performance and capabilities of today's laptops with tablet-like features.

To help realize that vision, the Intel Capital Ultrabook Fund will invest in companies building hardware and software technologies focused on enhancing how people interact with this new form of device, Ultrabooks, such as through sensors and touch, achieving all-day usage through longer battery life, enabling innovative physical designs and improved storage capacity.

The overall goal of the fund, which will be invested over the next 3-4 years, is to create a cycle of innovation and system capabilities for this new and growing category of mobile devices.

This seems to be one part of Intel’s overall strategy to help make Ultrabooks a reality. Intel's latest 2nd Generation Intel CoreTM processors will soon be released, which the company promises to enable thin, lightdesigns that are less than 21mm (0.8 inch) thick, and at mainstream prices. Systems based on these chips will be available for the 2011 winter holiday shopping season, says Intel.

Another processor, dubbed "Ivy Bridge," which is scheduled for availability in systems in the first half of 2012, will promise improved power efficiency, smart visual performance, increased responsiveness and enhanced security. And Haswell" is expected to reduce power consumption to half of the "thermal design point" for today's microprocessors.

This isn’t the first dedicated fund for Intel Capital. The investment firm also has country-specific funds such as the India Technology Fund, China Technology Fund II, Brazil Technology Fund and Middle East and Turkey Fund as well as past technology specific funds such as Intel Digital Home Fund and Intel Communications Fund. Intel says that its Intel Capital investment portfolio is currently valued at approximately $2.179 billion.

And now HTC officially announces partnership with Beats by Dre; devices coming this fall
August 10, 2011 at 10:45 PM

HTC - Beats by Dre
From left: Music mogul Jimmy Iovine, HTC CEO Peter Chou and Dr. Dre

That’s it. We’ve got a sneaking suspicion tomorrow’s "major news announcement" is going to have something to do with a partnership with Beats by Dre. First there was the tease. And then the official leak. And then the Beats by Dre blog post. And now, HTC has officially announced "a strategic partnership and investment with Beats Electronics LLC."

The obvious question at this point is, what device will we first see with Beats by Dre? This fall, says HTC.

As far as the terms of the partnership, no official dollar amount was listed, though $300,000 was mentioned by AllThingsD. Meanwhile, Beats Electronics will remain an independent company, and it appears that Best Buy (we assume among other retailers) will be involved on the sales side.

So, that’s it. Full press release is after the break. Join us for the conference call and liveblog Thursday morning, if you still want more.

AT&T TouchPad 4G runs through FCC with HSPA speeds [update: Opal, TouchPad Go?]
August 10, 2011 at 8:26 PM

Looking for a cellular-enabled HP TouchPad but don’t know where to look? We’re going to suggest the FCC’s certification labs, because it seems that they got enough hands-on time with the more-mobile-than-yours webOS tablet to give it the a-okay stamp of not brain boiling. There’s not much more to glean from the certification, except to say that the AT&T TouchPad 4G is on its way, and is now closer than ever.

UPDATE: The chaps over at webOSroundup dug into the FCC documents and noticed some interesting things. Firstly the FCC application lists the model as “Opal,” which we’ve seen leaked in the past as a 7-inch webOS tablet. Additionally, the set of four labels in the documents give the name of TouchPad Go, a brand name we saw HP file for back in mid-June. These same labels list familiar specs: 32GB of storage and a 1.5GHz processor.

There are two conclusions we can draw from this: 1) This FCC filing was for an unannounced 7-inch webOS tablet named the TouchPad Go, or 2) the TouchPad Go is an internal or marketing name for the cellular TouchPad, and the Opal name was not correct when leaked. We’re not entirely sure, and looking at the drawings provided in the filing, we’re really conflicted. It could be that they’re generalized, or components were moved around for the cellular TouchPad, or it could be that this really is a smaller TouchPad. It’s hard to say.

HTC To Make "Major Announcement" Tomorrow Morning
August 10, 2011 at 8:21 PM

HTC_new-logo

The word is out, folks: HTC CEO Peter Chou has something big on the books for tomorrow. A live teleconference is scheduled for at 8:30 PT/11:30 ET, and while the email making the rounds offers no insight, you can rest easy knowing that people will be speculating the night away.

Personally, given the email’s reliance on the word “major,” we expect the announcement will be more than, say, a new phone or tablet — perhaps something related to the ongoing patent dispute.

Our own Mobile Editor Greg Kumparak will be covering the event as it happens tomorrow morning, so tune in for the full scoop then.

Verizon opens Application Innovation Center in San Francisco, we go eyes-on (video)
August 10, 2011 at 8:20 PM

Verizon’s made good on its promise to open an Application Innovation Center in San Francisco, and kindly invited us down to have a gander. It’s much like its sister facility in Boston, except it eschews the LTE focus for one on mobile-app innovation. Developers both big and small will be able to take advantage of several labs, where they’ll be privy to Verizon equipment and services “not available elsewhere,” all while being a stone’s throw from Big Red’s in-house engineers and developers. On hand was Qualcomm, whose MDPs garnished the test lab, and Chomp, whose app-search tech powered an impressive nine pane multi-touch App Wall — allowing one to find and explore apps, replete with informative videos and QR codes for each. Want to know more? Check the gallery, videos and PR after the break.

Myriam Joire contributed to this report.

Cablevision and Viacom settle lawsuit over live TV on iPad
August 10, 2011 at 5:51 PM

Well, that was anticlimactic. Viacom quickly sued Cablevision after the Optimum for iPad (now on iPhone and iPod Touch) app launched and allowed cable customers to stream the entire channel lineup on their tablets, but now they’ve resolved that and “an unrelated business matter”. Viacom’s case against Time Warner’s similar offering is on hold while they also try to work out a deal, but Cablevision’s stance from the start is that its approach fell within the existing agreements and they appear to have gotten their way. Just like most other channel carriage disputes, it was likely a deal on the supposedly unrelated issue that got things moving, but as long as we can keep watching Teen Mom in the kitchen, bathroom or out on the patio it doesn’t really matter. Check the official statement from both companies after the break.

AT&T planning to launch its first 4G LTE smartphone near the end of 2011
August 10, 2011 at 3:35 PM

Excited about the impending launch of AT&T’s 4G LTE network and the high-speed devices that are sure to come with it? Hopefully you’re ok with using a hotspot or laptop dongle to hop on AT&T’s new LTE airwaves, because that’s all you’ll be getting initially. Peter Ritcher, AT&T’s senior vice president of mobility and consumer markets, said today that his carrier doesn’t expect to offer its first LTE-enabled smartphone until close to the end of 2011. The good news is that Richter also said that…

Acer Iconia Smart arrives in September, doesn't apologize for being late
August 10, 2011 at 3:35 PM

Five months is a very long time to wait for the large-handed smartphone addict, but finally there is some good news, everybody! We previewed Acer’s massive 4.8-inch phone / tablet hybrid back in February and it looked like it would arrive in the U.S. sometime in April. It’s now August and and according to Acer’s Facebook page, we still have a month to wait. The phoneblet (Yes, there’s already a name) retains the same specs we heard about in February: Snapdragon processor, twin cameras and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. When it finally does arrive, it’ll cost Europeans €499 — around $710.

[Thanks, Christof]

Got BlackBerry OS 7? Wikitude Augmented Reality Browser is waiting to be downloaded
August 10, 2011 at 3:35 PM

One of the most anticipated applications for the new BlackBerry OS 7 phones has to be the Wikitude Augmented Reality Browser.  If you’re not familiar, the augmented reality application displays the image from your smartphone’s camera. Layered on top of this image are clickable links to information about the places around you. In past demonstrations, we’ve seen banks, hotels, shops, and even BlackBerry Messenger Contacts pop up on the screen. All in all, the Wikitude Augmented Reality Browser appears to be a highly useful (and entertaining) app.

If you’ve got an OS 7 device (lucky!), then you’ll want to grab this app quickly. It’s available today, right now, in BlackBerry App World. Please note that this BlackBerry App World link will only work from a BlackBerry OS7 device.

AT&T Says No LTE Handsets Until Late 2011
August 10, 2011 at 3:35 PM

This image has no alt text

AT&T’s senior vice president of mobility and consumer marketing has mentioned that they will not be offering LTE handsets until late 2011. Starting out, they will only offer laptop dongles and mobile wifi hotspots, just as every carrier has done in launching their new 4G networks. The launch is on schedule for this summer still, but they will only start out in five markets (Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio) and there’s no telling how fast expansion will be. We didn’t expect AT&T to launch phones right away so this doesn’t bum as at all. In actuality, we’re rather pleased at how quickly we’ll see LTE handsets after the network launches. In the meantime, AT&T says it will continue to improve their 3G network while LTE phones mature enough for primetime. [via PhoneScoop]
