Win a BlackBerry 7 Smartphone and More in the first ever CrackBerry GooseChase!

* August 9th Update: OK GooseChasers, Day 1 is off to a pretty awesome start and we have a lot of users competing fairly for their chance to win in the CrackBerry GooseChase.  We’ve got a couple updates here from the GooseChase team, so just wanted to get theme out for everybody to read:

  •  For anybody who was experiencing an uncaught exception has been fixed and all users should download the latest build at crackberry.goosecha.se.
  • A reminder that all scores on the leaderboard are subject to review. People who cheat will NOT win this event, regardless of how it looks on the leaderboard at any given time.
  • Taking pictures of a computer screen is NOT allowed unless the mission explicitly calls for it (e.g. take a photo of their YouTube video, Poem Comment, etc.). Anyone found submitting an invalid photo (e.g. a picture of Jim Balsillie from the internet for J Baller!) will have their entire account deleted along with all of their photos. And we will actually do it.
  • Note that all photos must be taken from within the GooseChase app on your BlackBerry Smartphone. For photos that require you to take a photo of your BlackBerry then, you can either: get creative with a mirror, put a friend’s BlackBerry into the photo (PlayBooks count as BBs), or in an absolute worst-case scenario you could make up a cardboard representation of your BB (make it pretty!) that we’ll allow to pass for your BlackBerry.

See original contest post and details below.  Good luck!!

IBM and NCSA end their Blue Waters affair, go back to just being supercomputing friends
August 9, 2011 at 12:46 PM

It seems that IBM and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois have hit a snag in their once fruitful relationship. After nearly four years of partnering for the Blue Waters petabyte supercomputer, the NCSA’s recently released a joint statement explaining that IBM’s “terminated” its involvement with the project. If you’ll recall, IBM was supplying its latest Power 780 servers to get all that data flowing, but the company’s now decided that Ol’ Blue will require more resources than initially anticipated. Apparently, there were talks to try and keep the spark alive, but since those fell through both have decided to return each others CDs and hoodies assets involved with the project (per contract terms): IBM gives back the money, while the NCSA returns any hardware supplied. The two plan on remaining in touch for future endeavours, and the NCSA doesn’t appear to be too down either as it’ll be consulting with the National Science Foundation to keep Blue Waters afloat. You’ll find the official statement in the source link below, but we’ve included a video rendition of how we’d like to imagine it past the break.

$50 worth of webOS apps for you to spend your early-adopter credit on
August 9, 2011 at 12:44 PM

While HP continues to roll out the $50 app catalog credit to TouchPad early-adopters over the next several days, some of you are eager to spend that cash as soon as you get it. With plenty of apps in the catalog to go around, we wanted to give you a hand with choosing the best apps to get the most out of this promotional offer, and have created this list of 12 apps to spend your $50 credit on. If you aren’t one of the lucky ones to get the $50 app credit from HP (you got some hefty device discounts instead), or live outside of the US where the promo code is being delivered, this list is still a good one to look through and find the best apps that money can buy.

Skip on over the break to see which ones we’ve picked, and then hit the comments for even more suggestions from our community. As we’ve asked before, which apps are you going to buy next?

1. Preware Homebrew Documentation – $0.99

Because we love homebrew and supporting the developers behind it, we put Preware Homebrew Documentation (by WebOS Internals) first to make sure it’s at the top of your list as well. For $0.99 you not only get good documentation on how to get into the homebrew community as a user, but you also get to directly support some of the best developers that any mobile platform can have.

2. SecuStore 2 – $14.99

$14.99 might be a steep price to pay for most other apps, but when it comes to keeping passwords, data, notes and other information secure behind a 256-bit encrypted wall called SecuStore 2 (by MakleSoft), $14.99 is worth it (and even more so when it’s free from HP). If you aren’t convinced that you need this app, read our review first to see a full rundown of all of the features, and then hit that link above to make the purchase.

3. Glimpse – $5

Glimpse is one of those apps that you get because the concept sounds really cool, and you keep because it is really cool. As another app built by Inglorious Apps, Glimpse allows for up to three panels to be addigned a task or app; like a calculator, task list, feed reader, twitter client or weather dashboard, to name a few. It’s the ultimate multi-tasking experience on the TouchPad, and after you read our review of it you should download it from the catalog and see for yourself.

4. Weather Dashboard for TouchPad – $0.99

Derek gave this app stellar reviews in the most recent PalmCast episode, and once the rest of us downloaded it on his recommendation, we found the approval to be unanimous. Using webOS 3.0 notifications as the setting for the apps entire purpose, Weather Dashboard for TouchPad access to the weather news for today, tomorrow and right now without having to switch or launch another application.

5. Galcon Fusion – $2.99

The first game on our list, Galcon Fusion by Hassey Enterprises, Inc., has been a favorite of this team for quite a long time. Travel around the Galaxy and conquer enemies in this unique online multiplayer game. Fast-paced, cross-platform and beautifully designed, Galcon Fusion will remain at the top of our list of great webOS games for a long time to come.

6. Advanced Browser – $1.99

Another app by MakleSoft, the developers of SecuStore 2 up above, is Advanced Browser. It’s the first browser alternative to the stock Web app on the TouchPad, and brings a few really great features to the browsing experience. Tabbed browsing, auto-fill fields, cool bookmarks viewer and an inline search feature are just a few of the features to name. Grab it from the app catalog for $1.99.

7. Tea Reader – $1.99

It may not have every feature that we could design in a Google Reader client, by Tea Reader is still one of the best ones available right now, and a favorite amongst RSS fans. It has a clean design, integrates with other apps like Paper Mache, syncs well with Google Reader and is an overall pleasant app to use for daily feed-reading.

8. Gemini File Manager – $2.99

In its current undisputed spot (until Internalz HD is updated), Gemini File Manager by OMAStudios is a great TouchPad native app that gets you quick and easy access to some of the available folders hidden beneath the webOS UI so that you can manage those folders and files like you would on a desktop computer. Check out our review of Gemini File Manager here and then download the app from the catalog for $2.99 – you can thank us later for pointing you in that direction.

9. Market Pulse HD – $3.99

“Real-time quotes, full-screen charts, customized news and much more!” At least, that’s what the app description for Market Pulse HD says, and that’s what we agree with. This app by More Solutions was one of the first ones released for the HP TouchPad, and it shines with the others listed here because of the usefulness of what it does, and the style by which it does it. You can read our review here first or just head to the catalog to download it now; the choice is yours.

10. ComicShelf HD – $1.99

Another app developed originally for the homebrew community by a well known homebrew developer, ComicShelf HD by Jason Robitaille is on our list because it does something that very few apps can currently do: give us our comic book fix. Once you install the app you’ll be able to load up pre-bought comic books (in CBR or CBZ format) to view on your device at any time. For comic book fans and collectors, this app is a must.

11. Crosswords 2 – $9.99

While it may not be for everyone, we know how many of you Crosswords fans are out there, and this app is definitely one that you should get. With Crosswords 2 you get instant access to hundreds of Crossword puzzles as they appear from newspapers online, with new ones added every day.

12. Big Boss – $1.49

And finally, to tie off the whole list with another bit of fun, we have a game that turns the tables on every epic “hero” story that we’ve been told throughout our lives. Big Boss is a story about a giant monster (the “final boss”, if you will) that terrorizes a vast kingdom. But instead of trying to kill the monster, you play as him! Fight brave knights, dodge cannon shots, swat at quick ninjas and eat your way to freedom in this epicly fun journey by Fair Play Labs.

Apple Releases iOS 5 Beta 5, Turns on MobileMe to iCloud Migration for Developers
August 9, 2011 at 12:44 PM

liosfive.jpgOver the weekend, Apple pushed out iOS 5 Beta 5 (build 9A5288d) to developers, along with Xcode 4.2 Developer Preview 5, iTunes 10.5 Beta 5, and Apple TV Software Beta 4.

The biggest change, is that Beta 5 is available as an over-the-air update. However, the release notes state that users first wipe all the content from their device, using the “Erase All Content and Settings” feature in the Settings app. Before doing that however, Apple suggest that you make a backup with iTunes 10.5 Beta 4 or through iCloud. Some developers have stated that they were able to upgrade to iOS 5 Beta 5 without doing any of that. Your milage may vary.

Lastly, this update appears to be mostly minor bug fixes, with the biggest change (found so far) being the introduction of “Hearing Aid Mode” in Settings App. This mode is to help reduce interference between the device and hearing aids.

The update is 128MB in size as an over-the-air update.

three3-500x191.png

Also worth noting at this time, is that Apple has turned on MobileMe to iCloud migration for developers. Developers can now go to MobileMe.com/Move, and transfer their Mail, Contacts, and Calendar information from MobileMe to iCloud. The rest of your data such as Photo Gallery, iDisk and iWeb, will be in place at MobileMe until June 30th, 2012, after that, it’s history.

HP's $50 App Catalog credit for early adopters now available in your webOS Account [update]
August 9, 2011 at 12:44 PM

For early adopters of the HP TouchPad that feel burned by the recent discounts, HP’s promised $50 credit is now available to you through your webOS Account (formerly Palm Profile). While most of us were expecting an email to arrive in our inboxes with the news first, the careful sleuthing of Oscar Reynoso has found the $50 Promo Code completely active and available to applicable TouchPad owners in the webOS Account management website.

If you bought your TouchPad between July 1st and August 4th and live in the US (no word yet for those living outside of HP’s homeland), go to your HP webOS Account using the link below to find your $50 promo code safely tucked away at the bottom of the page. Browse the catalog to find the apps you want, and simply paste the code into the appropriate field to have the software purchased and installed on your device, courtesy of HP. If you aren’t sure what to buy just yet, have no fear, we have a whole list of apps for you to look at later today that will help you spend that $50 wisely.

Which apps will you be getting first? Let us know in the comments below.

Update: If you aren’t seeing the Promo Code in your webOS Account, just hold tight. It looks like HP is rolling out the credit over the next several days to early adopters. They said that it’s coming this week, though, so you can be sure that it will. PreCentral readers who have already received the credit are just ahead of the game, as HP has not yet made the update official for all qualifying profiles. Also, you can use this promo code for apps on your smartphone. It’s not just limited to the TouchPad app catalog.

Android Wallpaper Review: Spring Zen HD
August 9, 2011 at 10:25 AM

Spring Zen HD

Down here in Texas, the heat is so sweltering and the air so dry, everything is reduced to an unfortunate shade of brown. Fortunately, I can still see some green grass and lively nature in the Spring Zen HD live wallpaper.

Spring Zen HD is pretty simple at first glance, giving you a nest with eggs in it, falling leaves, a bench, and the occasional butterfly. Occasionally the whole scene pans around a bit, giving you a better look at the bench, leaves, and nest.

It runs incredibly smoothly and the graphics are fairly top-notch. Everything has a soft glow to it, and the colors are vibrant. The free version also boasts a considerable settings menu.

The settings menu gives you two preconfigured themes: Sakura and Maple. Sakura is the pink-flowered one, Maple is a maple leafed one.

From there you can choose to randomize the entire scene every time you turn on your screen, or you can specify very criteria, like what tree type, bench type, or egg color. You can also toggle things such as a butterfly, falling flora, sun beams, and the river.

Overall, Spring Zen HD is a pretty, aesthetically pleasing live wallpaper that performs well. It only sets you back a dollar, and for those who don’t want to pay, there’s also a free version, but it lacks the settings menu entirely.

More screenshots and download links are after the break.

BTIG upgrades Sprint rating based on valuation, potential iPhone 5 launch
August 9, 2011 at 10:20 AM

In a note to investors on Tuesday, BTIG Research analyst Walter Piecyk raised his rating on Sprint stock from Sell to Neutral without indicating a new price target. Piecyk had previously set his price target at $3.13, but noted that the stock now trades under five times BTIG’s 2012 earnings estimate, which is below consensus. The firm notes that it is not moving to a Buy rating because Sprint’s stock may fall further still, due to uncertain earnings, high debt leverage, lack of free cash flow and a worrisome 4G strategy. Piecyk believes that Sprint “needs to develop a clear 4G strategy including financing or taking control of Clearwire.” While BTIG did revise its estimates downward based on lower potential margins due to increased roaming costs, increased Network Vision expenses and the potential need for increased handset subsidies, it notes that upcoming events such as the resolution of Sprint’s Clearwire relationship and the potential launch of Apple’s iPhone 5 could have a positive impact on Sprint’s performance.

Acer's Aspire 3951 leaks with MacBook Air-like specs, available in October?
August 9, 2011 at 8:01 AM

It looks like Acer may be dropping down to the lightweight laptop division, now that images of its so-called Aspire 3951 have leaked out of Vietnam. An ostensible rival to the recently refreshed MacBook Air, the 13.3-inch 3951 reportedly boasts a similarly slim design, measuring 13mm thick and weighing less than 1.4 kilograms (about three pounds). According to Sohoa, the aluminum-cased device is powered by a second generation Intel Core processor, features an optional 160GB SSD, and offers more than six hours of battery life, along with Bluetooth 4.0 support. Much like the Air, this Aspire can purportedly boot up pretty fast, as well, rousing from sleep mode in just 1.7 seconds. It’s rumored that Acer will release this new line in October within the curiously affordable price range between $770 and $960, but we’ll have to wait and see whether that actually comes to fruition. In the meantime, you can check out an extra image of the Aspire 3951 below, or hit the source link for the full collection.

LTE Samsung Galaxy S II Surfaces, Codenamed Celox
August 9, 2011 at 7:54 AM

This image has no alt text

News has spread out of Korea that a 4G LTE version of the Samsung Galaxy S II is indeed in the pipeline with word of a September release attached. The handset codenamed Celox bears all the markings of the Galaxy S II plus a few key differences, most notably aside from the 4G LTE radio is the 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus display. The display size and leaked image are reminiscent of the recently spied Samsung Hercules though that phone designed for T-Mobile’s GSM network will most definitely lack 4G LTE support. Could we instead be looking at the phone destined for Verizon or even AT&T? Or perhaps some international 4G LTE market? Will the reported 1750mAh battery provide enough juice to power the large screen, dual-core processor, and next-gen cellular radio?

Acer's Aspire 3951 leaks with MacBook Air-like specs, available in October?
August 9, 2011 at 7:54 AM

[Thanks, @tranquochuyvn]

Wanted: Beta testers for new game 'Wheel of Wealth'
August 9, 2011 at 5:45 AM

Like Wheel of Fortune? If so then you’ll want to head to Shantek Online Solutions, developers of an upcoming game called ‘Wheel of Wealth’. They’re looking for about 100 beta testers for their upcoming release to put their game through the wringer, finding bugs, giving recommendations, etc. You don’t need to be a developer either as they’re going through the new “private beta Marketplace” made available via the AppHub. You simply supply your LiveID, you get a special download link from the Marketplace and bam, you have a new game to test for a few weeks.

Sounds good to us. So why not lend a hand, help make a game better and have some fun while you’re at it. Win win. Head right here for more info.
